Chin cosmetic surgery – mentoplasty

Mentoplasty is a medical intervention that is part of cosmetic surgery, used for changing the shape and size of the chin. Such a procedure aims to achieve a balanced profile, as well as a match between the nose and chin of every patient. This intervention is quite frequent, being requested by many people.

Both chin augmentation and reduction require a preoperative process. Beyond the tests recommended in most surgery operations, it is necessary to conduct a study that involves X-ray measurements, using which the doctor can determine the exact size of the implant for bone repositioning.

Chin augmentation is done by using silicone implants to increase projection. The operation consists in making an incision, usually through oral vestibule, through which the implant will be inserted. You can also use implants of fat belonging to the patient. Another option is cutting the lower part of the chin to properly position the tissue. The bone will then be fixed.

The chin can be reduced by removing excess tissue. The operation is very similar to the augmentation one, with the only difference consisting of not placing the implant. The chin area will be reduced and reshaped to suit the patient’s needs.

Mentoplasty is sometimes performed in combination with rhinoplasty (cosmetic surgery which changes the shape or size of the nose) in order to achieve a balanced appearance and a harmonious profile.
Possible complications and side effects of mentoplastiei include bleeding, infections and numbness of the face. The inserted implant might also change its position, requiring additional surgery interventions. Finally, for a few days after surgery patients will have some difficulties when pronouncing certain words.
